The Property

Nature & Wellness Haven

Twenty private acres in the mountains of Julian, California, right next door to the wolves.

Your Pack’s Private Mountain Retreat

Wolf Den Retreat sits on 20 acres of open agricultural land just outside the historic mountain town of Julian, in the backcountry of San Diego County. It’s a place where the pace slows the moment you turn onto the property: oak trees overhead, a creek running through the land, wide-open fields, and a night sky darker and starrier than anything you’ll see in the city.

The property was made for groups. Instead of scattering your family or friends across hotel rooms and rentals, Wolf Den Retreat brings everyone together in one place, with space to gather and space to wander off on your own.

At a Glance

  • Acreage: 20 private acres of agricultural land
  • Bedrooms: 7
  • Sleeps: up to 30 guests
  • Natural features: mature oak trees, a seasonal creek, open fields and exceptional dark skies
  • Location: Julian, California, next door to the California Wolf Center

The Home

With seven bedrooms and room for up to 30 guests, the home is built around togetherness. Shared living and dining spaces are made for long meals, board games, late-night talks and the kind of easy, unplanned time that groups rarely get anymore. When anyone needs a quiet moment, there’s always a bedroom, a porch or a shady spot under the oaks to retreat to.

It’s an ideal fit for family reunions, multi-generational trips, wellness and yoga retreats, milestone celebrations, friends’ getaways and team offsites.

The Land

Oaks and Open Space

Mature oak trees shade the property and give it a timeless, rooted feel. Beyond them, open agricultural fields stretch out and change with the seasons: green after winter rains, golden in late summer. There is room for kids to run, for morning walks, for quiet reading spots, and for the whole group to spread out without ever feeling crowded.

The Creek

A creek winds through the land, and after the rains it fills the air with the sound of running water. It’s a favorite place to slow down, take a walk, or simply sit and listen.

Dark Skies

Far from city lights, the night sky over Wolf Den Retreat is one of the property’s true treasures. On clear, moonless nights the stars fill the sky and the Milky Way stretches overhead. Bring a blanket, turn off the lights and look up. For many guests, the night sky is the moment they remember most.

Our Neighbors: The California Wolf Center

Here’s what makes Wolf Den Retreat truly one of a kind: the property sits right next to the California Wolf Center, San Diego County’s only wolf conservation center. It’s the reason behind our name and the heart of our theme. Our retreat is quite literally a den in wolf country.

The California Wolf Center is a nonprofit dedicated to wolf conservation, education and recovery in the wild. It cares for resident wolf packs and plays an important role in the recovery of the Mexican gray wolf, one of the rarest wolves in North America. Visitors can join a guided, hour-long tour of the conservation facility to see the resident wolves and learn how these remarkable animals live, communicate and care for their packs.

For our guests, a visit to the Wolf Center is the perfect complement to a stay at the Den. Spend the morning learning about the wolves next door, then come home to your own pack in the evening.

Planning tip: All California Wolf Center tours are by reservation only and often fill up, especially on weekends, so book your tour when you book your stay. Tours meet at the conservation facility, not at the Wolf Center’s Nature Store in downtown Julian. The Nature Store is worth a stop on its own for wolf exhibits and wildlife-themed gifts. Visit californiawolfcenter.org for current tour days and pricing.

Discover Julian

Just a short drive from the property, Julian is one of Southern California’s most beloved mountain towns. Nestled in the mountains of San Diego County, it feels a world away from the coast, with four real seasons, crisp mountain air and a small-town warmth that keeps visitors coming back year after year.

A Gold Rush Town

Julian was born in the gold rush of the late 1800s, when gold was discovered in the surrounding hills. Today its historic main street is lined with preserved buildings, antique shops, galleries and local boutiques. It’s a town made for strolling, browsing and taking your time.

Apple Country

Julian is famous for its apples and, above all, its apple pie. Bakeries in town turn out pies that people drive hours to taste. In late summer and fall, the orchards come alive with apple picking, and local cideries and wineries offer tastings of what the mountains produce.

Four Seasons in the Mountains

  • Spring: Green hillsides, wildflowers and lilacs, and the creek running full.
  • Summer: Warm days, cool mountain nights and the best stargazing of the year.
  • Fall: Apple season, changing leaves and Julian at its most festive.
  • Winter: Cozy nights in, and on some winter days a dusting of snow, a rare treat in Southern California.

Outdoor Adventure Nearby

  • Cuyamaca Rancho State Park: Miles of trails through oak and pine forest, with peaks offering sweeping views.
  • Lake Cuyamaca: Fishing, lakeside walks and peaceful mountain scenery.
  • Volcan Mountain: A favorite local hike with panoramic views of the backcountry.
  • Anza-Borrego Desert State Park: Head down the mountain to explore California’s largest state park, with desert canyons, spring wildflowers and famously dark skies.

Getting Here

Wolf Den Retreat is in the mountains east of San Diego, about an hour and a half’s drive from the city, depending on traffic and your starting point. The drive itself is part of the experience, climbing from the coast through rolling hills and into the oaks and pines. Mountain weather can change quickly, so check conditions before you travel, especially in winter. Full directions and arrival details are shared with every confirmed booking.
